The Online Fuel Company (OFC) is on a mission to be the ultimate technical solution partner for mobility retailers and fleet card operators around the world. Through our EzySt platform, we are revolutionising, digitalising and simplifying the entire mobility purchase process — for retailers, for fleets, and for the hundreds of thousands of customers who interact with our apps every day.
Our platform is live at hundreds of locations across Australia and powers everything from pay-in-app and pay-in-store experiences to in-vehicle ordering, merchant management portals, fleet management tools, fuel discounts and in-store promotions, and EV charging. We’ve already secured our first offshore customers, and our sights are firmly set on the global market.
We’re a tech scaleup with serious ambition — and we’ve just secured all the funding we need to make it happen, following our recent acquisition by payments business Mobilata. With backing in place and the runway to scale, we’re growing the team with people who want to help us redefine what mobility commerce looks like.
We don’t just keep cars moving — we move the whole industry forward. We do it with a small-team energy, a high-performance mindset, and a genuine care for the partners and customers who rely on us.
Our values shape how we show up every day:
Quality — We create better solutions through a high-quality, disciplined approach.
Integrity — We are committed to doing the right things, even when no one is watching.
Partner of Choice — We build impactful, rewarding partnerships and consult deeply for the best outcomes.
Ambitious — We are creative, ambitious, innovative, and committed to making positive differences for our partners and their customers.
Respect — We protect and celebrate the diversity in our business and the individual talents of every person on our team.
Care — The safety of each other, our partners and our customers is fundamental to everything we operate, design and deliver.
Our place is one of collaboration, ownership and bold thinking — and rather than have you blend in, we want to help you unleash your full potential.
As a Development Lead at OFC, you will own the technical direction and day-to-day delivery of a software development team building features across the EzySt platform. Working closely with the Head of Engineering, you’ll translate our technical strategy into actionable engineering work, mentor the engineers around you, set the bar for craft and quality, and stay genuinely hands-on with the codebase.
This is a high-impact engineering leadership role. EzySt processes real transactions for real customers in a regulated payments and mobility environment — and the engineering decisions you take will be felt at hundreds of forecourts every day. You’ll lead by example, solve complex technical problems alongside your team, and foster a culture of continuous improvement, ownership and disciplined craft. You’ll also lead how your team adopts AI-assisted development practices — accelerating delivery where it genuinely helps, and applying the critical judgement required of an engineering team shipping into a system where correctness, security and reliability genuinely matter.
Technical Leadership
Work closely with the Head of Engineering to translate high-level technical strategy into actionable, well-scoped engineering work for your team.
Lead the technical design and implementation of software solutions across the EzySt platform, ensuring they are scalable, maintainable and aligned with the broader technical roadmap.
Oversee code reviews, technical documentation and design discussions, including defining and maintaining the review standards that apply specifically to AI-assisted code contributions — covering correctness, security, performance, maintainability and licence compliance.
Stay hands-on — write production code, debug, troubleshoot and contribute to architectural decisions, including a well-reasoned perspective on where AI-assisted tooling supports sound software engineering and where it undermines it.
Team Leadership & Mentorship
Lead, mentor and support a team of software engineers, providing clear direction, coaching and accountability, and helping each engineer grow.
Develop each engineer’s ability to use AI-assisted tools with critical judgement, evaluate AI-generated output rigorously, and build genuine technical depth that doesn’t depend on AI assistance as a substitute for understanding.
Foster a collaborative, inclusive team environment where knowledge sharing, experimentation and continuous learning are expected, not exceptional.
Drive a formal cadence of performance conversations, objective setting, feedback and career development that supports engineers growing into senior and leadership roles.
Project Management & Delivery
Partner with product, design and other engineering leaders to understand requirements, shape technical specifications and agree on realistic timelines.
Break down complex projects into manageable tasks and sprints, delegate work effectively, and keep the team focused on the outcomes that matter.
Drive disciplined agile delivery practice — sprint planning, stand-ups, retrospectives — and adapt as needed, including planning and estimation practices that honestly account for AI-assisted development workflows.
Track progress against milestones, identify roadblocks early, drive resolution, and deliver high-quality software within scope, time and budget.
Collaboration & Stakeholder Communication
Act as the bridge between your team and product, design, QA, DevOps and senior engineering leadership, ensuring seamless collaboration and aligned goals.
Communicate technical decisions, risks and trade-offs clearly to the Head of Engineering and other senior stakeholders, including the delivery implications of AI tooling adoption in language non-technical stakeholders can act on.
Work closely with QA and DevOps on testing, integration, deployment and production quality, ensuring smooth releases and high standards across the pipeline.
Innovation & Continuous Improvement
Stay current with industry developments, emerging technologies and AI-augmented engineering practices, identifying opportunities to improve the efficiency, quality and scalability of the team’s output.
Drive continuous improvement within the team — adopting new tooling, retiring what doesn’t work, improving workflows and addressing technical debt deliberately rather than letting it accumulate.
Encourage a culture of innovation, giving the team room to explore ideas and technologies that genuinely benefit OFC and our customers.
Contribute meaningfully to architectural and long-term technical planning, ensuring new features and systems are designed for scalability, maintainability and the regulated environment we operate in.
To succeed in this role, you will bring:
Strong engineering capability, with the ability to architect and deliver scalable, maintainable systems and to reason clearly about where AI-assisted tooling supports or undermines those design goals.
Demonstrated technical leadership, with experience guiding software development teams in modern agile environments — including practical experience leading teams that use AI-assisted development tooling as part of their standard engineering practice.
Strong project management capability, with the ability to manage timelines, risks and stakeholder expectations honestly, and to communicate trade-offs clearly across engineering, product and the broader business.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with experience engaging product, design, QA and senior stakeholders, and translating engineering complexity into plain language that non-technical audiences can act on.
A coaching mindset, with a track record of developing engineers at various career stages, including deliberate coaching toward disciplined AI tool usage and critical output evaluation.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field — or equivalent experience.
7 or more years in software development, with at least 2-3 years in a leadership or senior technical role.
Demonstrated experience leading agile delivery teams in product-led SaaS, fintech, payments, mobility or similar environments, with measurable outcomes in delivery reliability, code quality and team capability development.
Strong hands-on engineering expertise — including production experience with Ruby on Rails and related front-end technologies (e.g. JavaScript, Tailwind CSS, Hotwire/Turbo), and a track record of delivering complex features in production environments grounded in genuine technical depth rather than reliance on AI-assisted output.
Experience with cloud platforms (AWS) and containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes), with a sound understanding of modern development practices including automated testing.
Practical experience using AI-assisted development tooling in professional engineering workflows, with a disciplined approach to validating AI-generated code in a system where correctness, security and reliability genuinely matter.
Technical leadership and software engineering expertise, including authoritative code review of AI-generated contributions and team-level AI adoption guidance.
Strong Ruby on Rails capability, with hands-on experience across the full Rails stack and the front-end technologies that sit alongside it (JavaScript, Tailwind CSS, Hotwire/Turbo).
Version control, branching and code review practices, including review workflows and standards designed for codebases where AI-assisted contributions are routine.
CI/CD pipeline management and delivery automation, including pipeline controls and quality gates appropriate for teams using AI-assisted code generation in a regulated payments environment.
Testing frameworks and quality engineering practices, including testing standards that apply equally to AI-generated and hand-written code.
Agile delivery and Scrum facilitation, including sprint planning and estimation practices that account for AI-assisted development workflows.
Excellent communication and influence — explaining technical trade-offs in language that travels well across engineering, product and the executive team.
Highly organised and detail-oriented, with strong problem-solving skills, adaptability and the judgement to balance short-term delivery needs with long-term technical health.
If you love what you do, you should love where you do it. At OFC, we offer:
A competitive salary commensurate with your skills, experience and the market.
The chance to do genuinely meaningful work on a platform that’s already changing the mobility industry — and the influence that comes with leading engineering on a customer-critical platform.
A flexible hybrid working culture — three days a week with the team in our Sydney office, two days wherever you do your best work.
Real ownership and influence — small enough that your work moves the needle, big enough to back you with the right people, tools and partners, with fresh runway from our acquisition by Mobilata.
Modern tooling and a mandate to keep it that way — including the chance to help shape how your team adopts AI-augmented development practices responsibly.
Growth and development opportunities, including support for professional certifications, conferences and ongoing learning.
A team of curious, ambitious, kind humans who care deeply about craft, customer experience and continuous improvement.
OFC is committed to building a globally inclusive company where every person is treated fairly, recognised for their individuality, supported to do their best work, and empowered to reach their full potential.
We believe in understanding and respecting differences — including but not limited to race, ethnicity, religion, gender, culture, age, neurodiversity and physical ability. Diversity makes our business better, our product stronger and our team more human. Everyone at OFC has a shared responsibility to respect and support a genuinely inclusive environment, every day.
