The Online Fuel Company (OFC) is on a mission to be the ultimate technical solution partner for mobility retailers and fleet card operators around the world. Through our EzySt platform, we are revolutionising, digitalising and simplifying the entire mobility purchase process — for retailers, for fleets, and for the hundreds of thousands of customers who interact with our apps every day.
Our platform is live at hundreds of locations across Australia and powers everything from pay-in-app and pay-in-store experiences to in-vehicle ordering, merchant management portals, fleet management tools, fuel discounts and in-store promotions, and EV charging. We’ve already secured our first offshore customers, and our sights are firmly set on the global market.
We’re a tech scaleup with serious ambition — and we’ve just secured all the funding we need to make it happen, following our recent acquisition by payments business Mobilata. With backing in place and the runway to scale, we’re growing the team with people who want to help us redefine what mobility commerce looks like.
As Development Lead — Web Portals at OFC, you will own the technical direction and day-to-day delivery of the team building OFC’s web portal experiences across the EzySt platform — including our merchant management portals, fleet management tools, and the supporting back-office surfaces that power how our partners and customers interact with EzySt. Working closely with the Head of Engineering, you’ll translate our technical and product strategy into actionable engineering work, set the bar for craft and quality across our Ruby on Rails, Tailwind CSS and Hotwire (Turbo and Stimulus) front-end stack, mentor the engineers around you, and stay genuinely hands-on with the codebase.
This is a high-impact engineering leadership role with a clear product focus. Our web portals are the surfaces through which retailers, fleets and merchants experience EzySt every day — and the engineering decisions you take will be felt directly in the workflows of the partners we serve. You’ll lead by example, solve complex front-end and full-stack problems alongside your team, and foster a culture of continuous improvement around UX, performance, accessibility and disciplined craft. You’ll also lead how your team adopts AI-assisted development practices — accelerating delivery where it genuinely helps, and applying the critical judgement required of an engineering team shipping into a system where correctness, security and reliability genuinely matter.
Technical Leadership — Web Portals
Work closely with the Head of Engineering and product to translate platform strategy into actionable engineering work for the web portals team, including the roadmap to continuously improve OFC’s portal UX and front-end capability.
Lead the technical design and implementation of OFC’s web portal experiences using our Ruby on Rails, Tailwind CSS and Hotwire (Turbo and Stimulus) stack — ensuring portals are fast, accessible, maintainable and aligned with the broader technical roadmap.
Drive the ongoing evolution of OFC’s portal front-end — improving page performance, interaction quality, accessibility, design-system consistency and the patterns that make our portals feel modern, polished and trustworthy.
Oversee code reviews, technical documentation and design discussions, including defining and maintaining the review standards that apply specifically to AI-assisted code contributions across both Rails back-end and front-end work.
Stay hands-on — write production Ruby, Rails, Tailwind and Hotwire code, debug, troubleshoot and contribute to architectural decisions across the full stack with a particular focus on the front-end experience.
Team Leadership & Mentorship
Lead, mentor and support the web portals development team, providing clear direction, coaching and accountability, and helping each engineer grow.
Develop each engineer’s ability to use AI-assisted tools with critical judgement, evaluate AI-generated output rigorously, and build genuine technical depth — particularly in modern Rails front-end practices — that doesn’t depend on AI assistance as a substitute for understanding.
Foster a collaborative, inclusive team environment where knowledge sharing, experimentation and continuous learning are expected, not exceptional.
Drive a formal cadence of performance conversations, objective setting, feedback and career development that supports engineers growing into senior and leadership roles.
Project Management & Delivery
Partner with product, design and other engineering leaders to understand requirements, shape technical specifications and agree on realistic timelines.
Break down complex portal initiatives into manageable tasks and sprints, delegate work effectively, and keep the team focused on the outcomes that matter to our partners and customers.
Drive disciplined agile delivery practice — sprint planning, stand-ups, retrospectives — and adapt as needed, including planning and estimation practices that honestly account for AI-assisted development workflows.
Track progress against milestones, identify roadblocks early, drive resolution, and deliver high-quality software within scope, time and budget.
Collaboration & Stakeholder Communication
Act as the bridge between the web portals team and product, design, QA, DevOps and senior engineering leadership, ensuring seamless collaboration and aligned goals.
Partner closely with product and design to ensure the UX of our portals continues to improve — combining technical leadership with a genuine eye for design and a strong point of view on what good front-end craft looks like.
Communicate technical decisions, risks and trade-offs clearly to the Head of Engineering and other senior stakeholders, including the delivery implications of AI tooling adoption in language non-technical stakeholders can act on.
Work closely with QA and DevOps on testing, integration, deployment and production quality, ensuring smooth releases and high standards across the pipeline.
Innovation & Continuous Improvement
Stay current with industry developments in Ruby on Rails, Tailwind, Hotwire and the broader modern front-end ecosystem, identifying opportunities to improve the efficiency, quality and scalability of the team’s output.
Drive continuous improvement within the team — adopting new tooling, retiring what doesn’t work, improving workflows and addressing technical debt deliberately rather than letting it accumulate.
Encourage a culture of innovation, giving the team room to explore ideas and technologies that genuinely benefit OFC’s portal experience and the partners who use it.
Contribute meaningfully to architectural and long-term technical planning, ensuring new features and systems are designed for scalability, maintainability and the regulated environment we operate in.
To succeed in this role, you will bring:
Strong engineering capability with a deliberate focus on web portal and front-end experiences, including the ability to architect and deliver scalable, maintainable, beautifully crafted web applications in modern Ruby on Rails environments.
Demonstrated technical leadership, with experience guiding software development teams in modern agile environments — including practical experience leading teams that use AI-assisted development tooling as part of their standard engineering practice.
A genuine eye for design and user experience — caring about how portals feel to use, not just how they function, and partnering with design to make small details right.
Strong project management capability, with the ability to manage timelines, risks and stakeholder expectations honestly, and to communicate trade-offs clearly across engineering, product and the broader business.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with experience engaging product, design, QA and senior stakeholders, and translating engineering complexity into plain language that non-technical audiences can act on.
A coaching mindset, with a track record of developing engineers at various career stages, including deliberate coaching toward disciplined AI tool usage and critical output evaluation.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field — or equivalent experience.
7 or more years in software development, with at least 2-3 years in a leadership or senior technical role, and a meaningful portion of your career spent shipping production web portal or web application experiences.
Deep, hands-on experience with Ruby on Rails in production environments, with strong fluency in the modern Rails front-end stack — JavaScript, Tailwind CSS and Hotwire (Turbo and Stimulus).
Demonstrated experience leading the design, build and ongoing evolution of web portal or web application experiences — ideally in B2B SaaS, fintech, payments, mobility or other partner-facing environments.
Experience with cloud platforms (AWS) and containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes), with a sound understanding of modern development practices including automated testing.
Practical experience using AI-assisted development tooling in professional engineering workflows, with a disciplined approach to validating AI-generated code in a system where correctness, security and reliability genuinely matter.
Familiarity with accessibility standards (WCAG), web performance optimisation, and the discipline of shipping production-grade UI in regulated environments.
Expert-level Ruby on Rails capability — full-stack, with deliberate strength in modern Rails-native front-end development using Tailwind CSS and Hotwire (Turbo and Stimulus).
Strong JavaScript fundamentals applied within the Rails-native front-end approach, including Stimulus controllers and progressive enhancement.
Front-end craft — semantic HTML, accessible markup, design-system implementation, responsive layout, performance, and the small details that make a portal feel polished.
Technical leadership and software engineering expertise, including authoritative code review of AI-generated contributions and team-level AI adoption guidance.
Version control, branching and code review practices, including review workflows and standards designed for codebases where AI-assisted contributions are routine.
CI/CD pipeline management and delivery automation, including pipeline controls and quality gates appropriate for teams using AI-assisted code generation in a regulated payments environment.
Testing frameworks and quality engineering practices across both back-end (RSpec or equivalent) and front-end concerns, including testing standards that apply equally to AI-generated and hand-written code.
Agile delivery and Scrum facilitation, including sprint planning and estimation practices that account for AI-assisted development workflows.
Excellent communication and influence — explaining technical trade-offs in language that travels well across engineering, product and the executive team.
