About Queen’s College
Founded in 1887, Queen’s College is a vibrant residential community proudly affiliated with the University of Melbourne. More than accommodation, Queen’s is a place of shared life, where academic ambition, intellectual curiosity, creativity, leadership, and care for others are part of the same human story. Grounded in the ethos of community and service, Queen’s brings together students, staff, alumni (known as Wyverns), and supporters who believe education should shape not only capable graduates, but thoughtful, generous, and engaged citizens.
The Role
Queen's College is seeking an experienced IT professional to help drive a meaningful period of modernisation across its technology environment. This is a hands-on leadership role with real scope to improve the way technology supports students, staff, and College life, working with a team who are genuinely invested in getting it right.
The Head of Information Technology will lead the College's transition to a more secure, reliable, and user-centred digital environment. It's a role that balances day-to-day delivery with longer-term improvement — ideal for someone who enjoys both solving practical problems and contributing to bigger-picture planning.
What You'll Be Doing
Your work will focus on practical, sustainable improvement across the College's technology environment — with a clear set of priorities to work through:
Cyber Security & Risk Management – improve the College's cyber security through better governance, identity management, monitoring, and staff training. Establish regular assurance activities and help build a culture of security awareness.
IT Governance – Put clearer structures in place around decision-making, policies, and prioritisation. Contribute to the IT Steering Committee and keep the leadership team well-informed on progress and risk.
Infrastructure & Core Systems – Lead practical modernisation of the College's technology environment — including Wi-Fi, cloud platforms, networking, and core business systems.
Service Reliability & User Experience – make sure staff and students experience technology as dependable and easy to use. Improve support processes and digital workplace tools.
Capability Building – help staff get more comfortable and confident with technology. Manage the Web Developer and external Managed Service Providers to maintain consistent, quality delivery.
Digital Improvement – seek opportunities to use data, automation, and emerging tools to make the College run more efficiently and support the community better.
About You
You're a capable IT professional who's comfortable owning a technology environment end-to-end — someone who can get things done operationally while also thinking ahead. You communicate well with non-technical colleagues and know how to manage vendors, prioritise competing demands, and bring people along with you through change.
You will bring:
Experience managing or modernising an IT environment, ideally across infrastructure, security, and systems
Solid understanding of cyber security practices, cloud environments, and identity management
Experience working with Managed Service Providers and technology vendors
Good project and change management skills
Clear communication with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
A practical, calm approach with strong attention to detail
3+ years in an IT leadership or senior technical role
Experience in education, community-based, or not-for-profit organisations will be well regarded
Tertiary qualifications in IT, Information Systems, or a related field
Industry certifications (ITIL, COBIT, CISM, CISSP, TOGAF, PMP, PRINCE2) are desirable
What we offer
A well-supported role with backing from the COO and senior leadership
Plenty of scope to make improvements that genuinely matter to the people around you
A friendly, community-oriented workplace with a strong sense of purpose
The chance to build something lasting in an organisation that values doing things well
