Most infrastructure engineers eventually hit a ceiling.

Large enterprises offer scale but often limit influence. Smaller organisations offer autonomy but rarely provide the complexity needed to keep growing.

Over time, many engineers become trapped maintaining environments they didn't design, following processes they can't improve and responding to issues they can't permanently solve.

This role is different.

You'll join a large Australian organisation investing heavily in modernising its technology environment and building the internal engineering capability required to support its future direction.

Supporting critical healthcare services across Australia, the organisation operates at significant scale while remaining agile enough for engineers to have meaningful influence over outcomes.

Why This Role Exists

Like many large environments, infrastructure teams have historically spent significant time reacting.

Tickets arrive. Incidents occur. Systems need attention.

The leadership team is focused on changing that.

The goal is not simply to keep platforms running.

The goal is to continuously improve them.

This means reducing manual effort, increasing automation, strengthening service ownership and creating more time for engineering-led outcomes rather than reactive support.

Success is measured less by how many tickets you close and more by how much better the environment becomes because you were there.

The platforms supported by this team underpin services relied upon by clinicians, care teams and operational staff across the organisation, making reliability, stability and continuous improvement particularly important.

The Role

You'll work across a broad enterprise infrastructure environment spanning:

  • Compute and virtualisation
  • Storage and backup platforms
  • Identity and access management
  • Monitoring and observability
  • Core infrastructure services
  • Automation and scripting initiatives
  • Emerging cloud platform integration

Alongside day-to-day platform ownership, there is significant project activity underway across platform modernisation, infrastructure uplift, service improvement and future cloud readiness.

The team is intentionally lean, creating opportunities for engineers to influence decisions, contribute ideas and take ownership beyond their formal remit.

Good ideas move quickly. Engineers are encouraged to challenge existing approaches and help shape how platforms evolve.

You'll work across both operational and project-based initiatives rather than being confined to one or the other.

What You'll Actually Do

  • Improve platform stability, reliability and service ownership
  • Reduce manual effort through automation and scripting
  • Strengthen operational maturity across the environment
  • Build internal capability and reduce vendor dependency
  • Support platform modernisation and future pathways into cloud operations, cloud engineering and architecture
  • Contribute to a more proactive engineering culture

If something is being performed repeatedly, the question becomes:

Can it be automated?

If a process feels inefficient, the question becomes:

Can it be improved?

That mindset is highly valued here.

The Environment

You'll work across a broad infrastructure landscape including technologies such as:

  • VMware
  • Nutanix
  • Windows Server
  • Entra ID
  • Citrix
  • PowerShell

The environment supports a large, geographically distributed workforce operating across multiple locations nationally.

Experience across every technology is not expected.

What You'll Bring

You may currently be working as a Platform Engineer, Senior Systems Engineer, Infrastructure Engineer or Systems Administrator ready for broader ownership.

You'll likely bring:

  • Strong experience across enterprise infrastructure environments
  • Windows, virtualisation, storage and core platform experience
  • Exposure to PowerShell, scripting, automation or process improvement
  • Strong operational discipline and change management capability
  • A service ownership mindset
  • The ability to engage effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • We're looking for engineers who enjoy ownership, learning and improving how things operate.

Why This Role

This role will suit someone who wants more than another infrastructure support position.

You'll gain exposure to enterprise-scale platforms, project delivery, automation, operational improvement and future cloud capability, while working in a team where good ideas can actually move quickly.

Unlike larger enterprises where responsibilities are heavily segmented, you'll see how decisions are made and have direct access to the people making them.

You'll be trusted to own outcomes, not simply complete tasks.

For the right engineer, this can become a genuine platform into cloud engineering, architecture or broader technical leadership over time.

You'll be contributing to technology platforms that support critical healthcare services across Australia, where technology reliability directly impacts the people delivering care every day.

If you're tired of maintaining environments without being able to improve them, and you're looking for a role where ownership, influence and growth still exist, this role will feel very different.
