Senior Backend Engineer (Node.js / TypeScript / AWS) – High-Scale Consumer Platform (Hybrid – 2 Days WFH)

Full-time | Sydney | $140,000–$160,000 + Super | Product Engineering Team

I’m partnering with a well-known digital marketplace building high-scale consumer APIs and backend services used by a national audience.

They’re hiring multiple Backend Engineers (Mid–Senior) to design, build, and scale distributed backend systems powering a high-traffic production environment. If you enjoy owning backend services, working deeply with AWS, and solving performance and scalability challenges at scale, this role will be a strong fit.

The Opportunity

You’ll join a collaborative backend engineering team building and operating cloud-native services that support a large consumer platform.

The role is strongly hands-on (approx. 70% building / 30% design), working primarily with Node.js, TypeScript, and AWS to deliver scalable APIs and backend services in production.

You’ll work on problems including:

• Scaling backend services handling large volumes of API traffic

• Designing and improving distributed systems in AWS

• Building services that integrate with emerging AI / LLM capabilities

• Improving performance, reliability, and observability across production systems

Working closely with experienced engineers, you’ll help design and build services that support both current product features and the next generation of platform capabilities.

Responsibilities

You’ll contribute to:

• Designing and scaling Node.js / TypeScript backend services running in AWS

• Building high-throughput APIs powering a national consumer platform

• Contributing to distributed and event-driven architectures

• Improving system performance, monitoring, and reliability across production environments

• Supporting the development of AI/LLM-enabled service components

• Collaborating with engineers across teams to deliver scalable platform capabilities

Technical Skills You’ll Need

• 5+ years building backend systems using Node.js and TypeScript

• Strong experience building scalable APIs in AWS (e.g. Lambda, API Gateway, event-driven services, or containerised workloads)

• Experience working with SQL and NoSQL databases in production environments

• Practical understanding of system design trade-offs across performance, cost, scalability, and reliability

• Experience with monitoring, logging, and observability tools in production systems

Nice to Have

• Experience working on high-traffic consumer platforms

• Exposure to event-driven or serverless architectures

• Experience working with AI/LLM-enabled services

• Familiarity with API performance optimisation and cloud-based monitoring tools

• Interest in distributed systems and scalable architecture patterns
